Living Away From Home Allowance (LAFHA)

Fiducia advisors prepares comprehensive reports detailing your entitlement to LAFHA. These can be provided to your employer as part of an effective salary packaging arrangement saving you thousands of dollars in tax. (Subject to eligibility). We are also happy to liaise with your payroll/HR department to discuss any concerns or answer any questions they may have.

LAFHA is a tax free allowance paid to an employee to compensate them for additional expenses incurred and any disadvantages suffered because the employee is required to live away from their usual place of residence in order to perform their employment related duties.

An employee is regarded as living away from their usual place of residence if they would have continued to live at the former place if they did not have to work temporarily in a different locality. This may be the case for some employees on a 457 visa or those headhunted from overseas to work for Australian businesses. As such, they may be entitled to the tax free allowance.

Employees who move to a new locality with an intention to return to their old locality at the end of the appointment would generally be treated as living away from their usual place of residence.

Whether or not an employee is living away from home then will depend on the facts of each case. Factors such as the lifestyle of the employee, residency status, type of profession and industry often need to be taken into account.

The general expenses covered by a LAFHA are additional food costs for an employee (and their family) and additional reasonable accommodation costs. Relocation costs can also be packaged.
